"Diana!" a voice yelled out from behind Diana.

"Ruby!" Diana exclaimed "How are you?"

"No, Ruby I don't have anyone to go with." Diana replied.

"Great! I mean...ummm...that's to bad." Ruby said almost blowing her plan.  "How about I hook you up with someone?"

"Ruby I don't kno..." Diana was interrupted.

"Great!!!!!"  Ruby said " I'll get this person to pick you up around...ummm...5:30, o.k. Anyways now I want to tell you about these guys I meet the other day!"

As Ruby babbled on about her latest crushes Diana was thinking about who she was being 'hooked up with.'

'I hope it's someone I and like! If he wasn't I'd be soooooooo board! Oh please let him be very handsome!!!!' Diana's thoughts were suddenly broken by Ruby saying "Remember Diana 5:30, Friday o.k. Bye!!!!" and with that she left.

"Diana, why didn't you invite Ruby in?" Mrs. Barry asked when Diana entered the kitchen.

"She left before I could ask." Diana replied to her mother.

"So anything happening?" Mrs. Barry asked.

"Well, Ruby is setting me up with someone for the dance on Friday."

"Friday!!! It's Wednesday! You don't have a good dress to were to the dance!!!" Mrs. Barry said over reacting as she often does.

"Mother I'll wear the dress the new dress Father got me last week." Diana replied again not very happy.

"Oh well, that dress will have to do. Now go get your sister for supper." Mrs. Barry said to Diana.

'Now what am I going to do?' Fred Wright thought to himself. 'Gilbert is always going around with Anne! He never has time for his friends anymore!'

"Fred! Wait up!' you guess it, Ruby yelled as she ran up to Fred. Fred waited till Ruby caught up.

"So I here you have no one to take to the dance on Friday." Ruby said to Fred.

"No I don't and I don't plan on going!" Fred replied to Ruby who was tired of hearing about the dance.

"Well I know of someone who wants to go but can't because she doesn't have anybody to go with." Ruby said with the same sly smile she put on for Diana.

"Before you go on, who is it?" Fred asked.

"Well she is a person you know, she is Anne Shirley's best friend..."

"Diana Barry?!?!? I thought she would certainly have some one to go with."  Fred said shocked.

"Well know that you know who she is will you go with Diana?" Ruby asked.

"Sure!!! when do you want me to pick her up?" Fred asked trying not burst with happiness.

"5:30! This is great!!!!" Ruby yelled "See you and Diana on Friday!!" she yelled as she ran off.

"That's great Diana!!!" Anne exclaimed when Diana told her. "Oh! I wonder who he is?"

"No Anne it's not great! I don't know who he is! He might just be one of Ruby's crushes who she hooked up with me so he could come along!" Diana complained.

"OR it might be your knight in shining armor who will sweep you off your feet and take you far away from Avonlea." Anne replied to Diana hoping that it wouldn't be!

Diana sighed. She knew that Anne might be right.

"So who are you going with?" Diana asked.

"Gilbert. He asked me yesterday." Anne replied lightly.

"It seems you two are meant to be!" Diana teased.

"What do you want Josie?" Diana said as she glared at Josie.

"Moody Spurgeon!" Josie said with a proud expression on her face. It took all their might not to laugh in front of Josie.

"That's wonderful Josie! Now if you'll excuse us, we have to be going!" Anne said as she grabbed Diana and ran out the door.

"Oh Anne that was so funny! She looked proud to be going to the dance with Moody!!" Diana said as soon as they were out of the store.

"Oh my look at the time! I have to go, Marilla wants me back so I can help her with supper." Anne exclaimed as she looked at her watch.

"But I thought that we were going to go on a walk when we were done?" Diana asked.

"I'm sorry Diana but that I have to be back at Green Gables.  Bye! See you tomorrow!" Anne said as she walked away. "We'll go on a walk on Saturday!" She yelled over her shoulder.

Diana walked home disappointed. She wanted to talk with Anne but she is always doing something else!

'She never has time for me anymore!' Diana thought as she turned the corner.

As she turned the corner she saw Fred Wright.

'Oh great just the person I want to talk to!' Diana thought sarcastically. 'Roly poly Fred Wright! O.k. Fred just nod and keep walking. You don't have to talk to me, just keep walking.'

'Oh no it's Diana! I'll blow the whole thing if I stop and talk to her! But I won't seem like a gentleman if I don't. I have to stop and talk to her.' Fred thought as he saw Diana.

"Hello Diana!" Fred said cheerfully.

"Hello Fred" Diana said unhappily.

"May I walk with you?" Fred asked.

"Fine!" Diana said giving up all hope of escaping Roly Poly Fred Wright.

"Are you o.k?" Fred asked after a few minutes of silence "You look stressed out.

"Well if you HAVE to know, Anne is always spending time with Gilbert or her story! and to top it all off, Ruby 'hooked my up with someone' to go to the dance with!" Diana explained really fast.

"Wow ummm" Fred said while trying to think of something to say. "I don't know what to say. It will all turn out alright. I know it will!" Fred said.

"Thanks Fred!" Diana replied 'Fred's not that bad! I'm glad I told him. I feel alot better now!' Diana thought as she said that.

About 5 minutes later they came upon Orchard Slope.

"Thanks for walking me home." Diana said breaking the silence.

"Your welcome, see you tomorrow!" Fred replied.

"Bye" Diana replied as she watched him walk away.

Around 2:00 in the afternoon Diana went over to Green Gables where Anne and herself were going to get ready.

"Oh Anne I'm so chunky!!!! I wish I was as thin as you are!"

"You know who is taking me don't you!" Diana said.

"yes." Anne replied.

"That's not fair! I'm the person who should know who I'm going with not you!! Sorry I didn't mean to snap at you." Diana said shocked.

"It's o.k Diana. Ruby told the person and the person told Gilbert and Gilbert told me." Anne said trying to calm Diana down.

"We better finish if we are ever going be be done dressing before 5:30!!" Diana said perking up.

"You're right Diana!" Anne said as Diana and hurried a little bit faster!

"Diana will you sit down!" Marilla said as Diana sat down. "Why are you so nervous? It's only Fre...."

"Marilla!!!" Anne cut off Marilla before she gave away Ruby's secret.

"You know too?" Diana exclaimed

"Yes I do." and with that Marilla left the room.

"Oh Anne it's 5:30 and they aren't here!!!" Diana said getting very nervous.

"Diana men are always late!" Anne said trying to calm Diana.

Then they both heard a buggy rolling down the lane.

"Oh my gosh! I can't do this Anne! I just can't!!" Diana exclaimed.  Anne shut all the curtains so Diana wouldn't see who HE was.  The knock at the door...

Marilla answers and invite them in...then...then...they walk in.

"FRED!!" Diana exclaimed when she saw him.

"Uhh... Hi Diana." Fred said not knowing what she would do.

"I'm so relieved that it's YOU who is taking me to the dance!" Diana answered Fred. Gilbert didn't know that Fred had a secret crush for Diana.

"I think we should be going don't you think Fred?" Gilbert said nudging him.

"Yes absolutely!" Fred said never taking his eyes off Diana.

Diana didn't say anything to anybody on the way to the dance. Anne and Gil talked all the way. Fred as before couldn't take his eyes off of Diana.   Diana found herself blushing when she looked at Fred.

'Whats up with me? Since when do I blush under Fred's gaze? He isn't the romantic suitor that I thought of when I was a child. But Fred is kind of handsome in that suit. What am I thinking!!! I'm thinking that Roly Poly Fred Wright is kinda handsome in that suit?' Diana thought.

"Diana are you getting out of the buggy or not?" Anne asked.

"Yes. I kind of lost track of time." Diana said not really knowing what she was saying.

Anne walked in on Gil's arm and Diana on Fred's arm. Anne with Gil wasn't a big surprise but Diana Barry and Fred Wright? That was a different story.

Ruby ran up to Diana and Anne once they walked into the room.

"Hi Anne, Diana! So Diana do you like your date for the dance?" Ruby smiled.

"I'm getting over the shock myself." Diana replied.

"Getting over the shock?" Ruby said not impressed.

"HI there Anne, Diana, Ruby." a voice said behind them.

"OH Josie, how are you? Who did you come with?" Ruby said.

"I'm fine and I CAME with..."Josie said using one of her non-effective pauses "Moody Surgeon!"

"What?!?!?!?" Ruby said.

"I know isn't it wonderful?"

"NO it's not!!!!" Ruby ran off crying.

"What did you do Josie?" Anne yelled at Josie.

"I...ummm...don't know!" Josie managed to say.

"Well it looks like Ruby really likes Moody and you just crushed all of her hopes." Diana said.

"How was I supposed to know?" Josie asked.

"Well it's kind of easy!" Emma White said as she came up behind Josie. "Do you see the way she looks at him? It's like the way Diana looks at Fred all the time." Emma said. Of course after she said that she realized that Diana was standing there.

"What?!?! The way I look at Fred?!?!?!" Diana said crying. This time it was Diana to run off.

"Great Emma! Look what you did!!!!" Anne yelled.

"What?!?!" Emma said.

Fred watched Ruby run out of the room and was now watching Diana run out of the room. Gil, Moody and Charlie had gone over to were Anne, Josie and Emma were to make sure that there wasn't any fighting. When no one was looking Fred ran out the door to follow Diana. Just as he ran out side he saw Diana running down the lane.

"Diana wait!!!" Fred yelled after her.

"Great she didn't hear me." Fred said to himself. Diana did hear him but she didn't want him to see her like this, but Fred ran after her till she stopped at the Lake of shining waters.

"Diana....didn't...you hear me?" Fred asked when he caught up to her.

"Yes." Diana replied.

"Well why didn't you stop?" Fred asked.

"Because I didn't want you to see me like this." Diana said simply.

"I saw you run out and I was worried because I...ummm...Diana.....I.....really....ummm...like...you." Fred finally answered

"You what?" Diana said as she faced Fred.

"I really like you." Fred repeated. Diana sat on the ground and cried.

"Diana I didn't mean to make you cry." Fred sitting down beside her.

"I'm not crying because I sad Fred." Diana between sobbs.

"Why then are you crying?" Fred said confused.

"Because I sooooooooooo happy." Diana said looking at Fred. Diana looked into Fred's eyes and Fred looked into Diana's eyes and for the first time the two kissed a long tender kiss. Fred and Diana walked very slowly back to the dance.

"Fred you promise not to tell anyone?" Diana said before they went back in.

"Yes Diana I do." Fred said looking into her eyes and kissing her real quick just incase any one saw them. Which someone did. Gilbert, who was waiting for Anne to get their coats so they could look for Diana and Fred.

"Gilbert!!!" Fred and Diana said at the same time. Gilbert laughed when he saw their faces.

"Promise you won't tell anyone!!!!!!!" Diana finally said over coming her surprise.

"Yes I won't tell anyone!!" Gil said still laughing. Just then Anne came out.

"Diana where were you?" Anne asked.

"I went for a walk." Diana said simply.

"Is that all?" Anne said looking curiously at Fred and Diana.

"Yes Anne. Why would you get such an idea." Diana said to Anne.

"Well Fred ran off there pretty fast..." Anne was cut off.

"I was worried o.k Anne." Fred interjected.

"Well I was worried too." Anne said convinced.

"Since we didn't get to dance alot do you guys want to go back in or just go home?" Gil asked the group.

"Dance!" Anne and Diana said laughing, Fred and Gil just rolled there eyes.

*Inside the hall*

"Diana....are you o.k?" Emma asked.

"Yes I'm fine Emma." Diana said cooly.

"Well I just want to say that I didn't mean to say that to your face. I mean I was stupid enough to believe what Josie Pye would say." Emma said ashamed.

"That's o.k. Emma. Everyone does some stupid things in their lives, some more than others. For example, Josie Pye." Diana said cheerfully. Everyone laughed. For the rest of the night everything went smoothly. Diana had her head up in the clouds for the next couple of days.

'Fred proposed and I said yes!!! I can't believe this!!! I bursting to tell Anne but she is so busy with school, her story and...Gilbert. I wonder when the two of them are going to make a match of it.' Diana though as she was washing the dishes.

"DIANA!!!! You are dripping that water all over my floor!!!" Mrs. Barry interrupted Diana's thoughts.

"Sorry Mother. I was day dreaming." Diana said dreamingly.

"I think that you are spending too much time with that red head at Green Gables." Mrs. Barry said coldly. Mrs. Barry hadn't really gotten over the raspberry cordial accident.

"Well oh my gosh! Why isn't that Fred Wright walking up the lane?" Mrs. Barry said confused

"Why yes it is Mother." Diana said simply.

Then Fred was sitting down and Mrs. Barry asking him questions about how his family was and stuff like that, that Fred stopped her and said "Not to be rude or anything Mrs. Barry but Diana and I need to tell you something."

"What?!?!?" Mrs. Barry said

"Well Mother Fred and I are going to get married!!" Diana said letting all of her excitement out.

"I never saw that coming." Mrs. Barry said trying to get over the shock.

"Mother are you happy?" Diana asked

"Happy? I'm more than happy!!!! I'm so glad that you're getting married to someone like Fred!!!"

Over the next few weeks, somehow the news of Diana and Fred getting married got out and spread. Almost everyone knew except.....Anne.

"Fred, have you told Gil to tell Anne?" Diana asked.

"Yes. But Gil said that Anne's been acting weird lately. He hasn't seen her in 2 days." Fred replied

"That's a change. Oh! I hope he tells her soon!"

"Diana I have to go. Mother wants me home for supper."

"Bye Fred." Diana replied looking our the window. Fred was worried about her. She wasn't herself lately and wondered what was happening with her and Anne. After supper Diana went out into the garden. She was looking at some daisies when she saw Anne coming up the lane.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Was the first thing out of Anne's mouth.

"You were to busy with your story and with...Gilbert that I didn't have the chance to tell you!" Diana said back. "I'm sorry Anne. I just wish that you will forgive me and help me plan my wedding." Diana said sadly.

"Oh Diana I can never be mad at you!" Anne said as she hugged Diana.  "Let's go inside and start planning!" Anne said grabbing Diana's hand. The two girls spent the rest of the night talking about their future and when they parted they were both happy. Diana was getting married and Anne had a secret that she didn't want to tell Diana. But that's another story.
