Chapter Two: Coming Home
Anne walked in the cold alongside Gilbert. They talked of Jem’s children, their dear Ingleside. They talked about almost everything until they came to Avonlea. The town looked very much the same. The General Store still was the center of town. A very aged Diana Barry came out of the store. She had an idea when Anne was coming. Gilbert had written her of course.
"Anne? Anne Shirley what are Earth are you doing here?" Diana said forgetting to refer to her by her married name.
"Oh Diana, I have come home at last. I couldn’t bear it any longer without seeing the outskirts of home," Anne embraced her arms.
"Oh Anne," Diana smiled. She truly had missed her friend over the years and was happy that she was standing before her.
"I want to go see Green Gables," Anne declared. Gilbert and Diana exchanged looks.
"You’ve done a lot of walking today Anne girl," Gilbert said. "Maybe we should go back to the hotel and you can take a nap,"
"Please Gilbert," Anne pleaded. Gilbert knew he couldn’t refuse her when she asked him like that.
"Oh alright but this is the last stunt you pull today Anne,"
"Alright, alright, lets go,"
"If you going to go I want to go with you," Diana claimed. She wanted to be there for the moral support of her friend. She was also curious of the state of Green Gables herself. So off the trio went. Trampsing through fields, roads that the little town of Avonlea had forgotten. Until they came to the clearing.. The clearing where Anne made a gasp.....It was Green Gables alright. The shutter were broken down and needed fixing.
"God only knows what that place looks like inside," Diana remarked. Anne stepped forward and walked into the crumbling home.
"What do you think Anne girl?"
"Oh Gilbert, the house has missed me so, I can feel it,"
"Marilla would turn over in her grave if she knew the condition of this place," Diana added inspecting the cobwebs. Anne went upstairs to the little room all the while talking to the house as if it was an old friend. She went to that little room where years of memories flooded Anne’s mind.
"Hello, little room. You’ve always been here for me right?" Anne smiled. She could here the echo of laughing. It made her smile. Next she went to the room she had dared not enter in many years, Marilla’s. She could hear Gilbert and Diana talking downstairs. She turned the doorknob, it was like she could feel that Marilla wanted her there.
"Marilla? Are you here with me in spirit?" Anne asked a empty room. "You knew more than anyone what this place meant to me. You and Matthew. You knew I’d come home one day. I promise to take care of Green Gables. And when I don’t my children will and their children will,"
Anne tried not to cry. How she longed for one just one of Marilla’s hugs. How she wanted her to come to her, and tell her "Stuffin nonsense, that’s just too frivoulous,". Then she would smile. Gilbert came upstairs. He wanted to comfort Anne.
"Anne?"
"Over here Gilbert," Anne said wiping the tears from her face.
"You alright?"
"Marilla would want me to take care of Green Gables. It was her wish Gil,"
"Anne, do you want me to buy Green Gables?" Gilbert asked. Anne grew to a smile.
"Could we Gil? A summer house or anything we want it to be," she added.
"I’ll goto town and see what can be done about it," Gilbert said holding his hands on his hips. Diana came up and Anne said.
"Guess what Diana? Green Gables is going to be mine again!" she exclaimed. Diana was shocked by the news.
